In The News
Today, April 30, 2025, a federal judge in Vermont ordered the conditional release of Mohsen Mahdawi, a legal permanent US resident and Columbia student organizer who was detained and ordered to be deported by the Trump administration. For more information, follow Mohsen’s advocacy website and social media. The news of Mohsen’s release from detention follows the Federal Government’s reversal of SEVIS terminations nationwide. Check out this article from Inside Higher Ed for more information. Both Mohsen’s freedom and SEVIS reinstatements are moments of joy for our communities, but there are still students held in detention alongside thousands of others.
On April 29, 2025, the University of San Francisco has committed to divesting from GE Aerospace, RTX Corporation, Palantir, and L3Harris following the persistence of the student movement at USF alongside the students’ reclamation of the Gleeson Library atrium, renaming it the Hossam Shabat Atrium after the martyred journalist from Gaza. Check out the USF Students for Palestine statement for more information here.

Check out this opinion piece by Professor Nour Joudah titled Beyond Encampments: You Are The Movement. It has been a year since the student-led Popular Universities and Liberated Zones launched across the U.S. to bring visibility to the genocide in Gaza. It is crucial that we, as students, faculty, workers, and community members, continue to build power and combat the complicity of our institutions and government in the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people. We continue to face repression, our students are attacked, detained and deported, but through the power of community building and community education we can keep our movements strong. Continuing to center Gaza is vital as reports indicate mass death from famine and malnutrition, for more information read PYM’s statement, Gaza On The Brink.
SJN continues to advocate for the end of the occupation of Palestine and this extends to the end of the occupation of Kashmir. Check out social media posts by Stand With Kashmir for more information and read this statement by NSJP and Stand With Kashmir on the connection between the shared struggles of Palestinians and Kashmiris.
Check out this opinion piece in Mondoweiss by Stephanie Guilloud & Desiree S. Evans titled Why Pro-Palestine protesters are being sent to a for-profit ICE prison in rural Louisiana. This opinion piece outlines the connections between the for-profit, private ICE prison system as tools of oppression and the attacks on political prisoners like Mahmoud Khalil and Rümeysa Öztürk.
