In The News
On May 14, 2025 a federal court ordered the release of Badar Khan Suri, a postdoc from Georgetown University who spent 2 months in ICE detention. He has since been reunited with his wife and family. Read Badar Khan Suri’s statement about his experience here. On Monday, May 19, 2025, Mohsen Mahdawi walked across the stage to receive his diploma at Columbia University’s graduation ceremony after being released from immigration detention.
Mahmoud Khalil is still detained at an immigration detention facility in Louisiana. Despite traveling over 1,000 miles to visit him, ICE denied his wife and son the ability to visit him in detention. For more information on Mahmoud Khalil’s case and how to support his family, visit CCR’s website.
Two students who used their platform as speakers at their respective university graduations are being targeted by their administrations for taking a stand against genocide. Logan Rozos at NYU and Cecilia Culver at GWU used their graduation speeches to call out their university’s complicity in the genocide of Palestinians. NYU is withholding Logan Rozos’ diploma and GWU has banned Cecelia Culver from university property.
On May 16, 2025, Zeteo News reported on a new policy the Trump administration is imposing on schools. The new policy from the State department demands universities to report international students and scholars who have participated in campus protests. This is another attempt by the Trump administration to create fear and panic for our international students and scholars. SJN will continue to provide updates as we learn more, but each of you can advocate and demand your universities and schools to protect international students and scholars. Check out the Sanctuary & Popular University Network Toolkit for more information on how to pressure your institutions of higher learning to protect international students and scholars.
