In The News
Momodou Taal is a Ph.D. student at Cornell University who is facing threats of deportation for his pro-Palestine organizing. Check out his interview on Democracy Now as he tells his story. If you are moved by his story, consider donating to Momodou’s legal defense fund. CUNY CLEAR successfully filed an emergency motion to block ICE’s attempt to unlawfully detain Columbia University student, Yunseo Chung. For more information and how to support, check out CUNY CLEAR on socials.
Helyeh Doutaghi was placed on leave by Yale University due to a falsified AI-generated report. TAKE ACTION: SIGN THE LETTER OF SUPPORT, SHARE FAR AND WIDE. DropSite News and Democracy Now have reported on the detention of Georgetown University Postdoc, Badar Khan Suri, who was detained by DHS agents after a public campaign against him and his wife by pro-Israel groups. Dr. Suri was detained by DHS on March 17, 2025. He was informed that his J-1 visa had been revoked. On March 25, 2025, Ph.D. graduate worker at Tufts University, Rumeysa Ozturk, was abducted by ICE. She has been transferred to a detention facility in Louisiana. A Ph.D. student at the University of Alabama, Alireza Doroudi, has been abducted and detained by ICE. His location is still unknown.
According to BTS Newsroom and other reporting, Columbia University capitulated to all of Trump’s demands in the hopes of regaining the $400 million revoked by the administration. In response the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) responded with a statement condemning the actions of Columbia University and their capitulation to the demands. Palestine Legal also put out a statement arguing for protections for student protesters under Title VI.
We are concerned by the attacks on our Palestinian and pro-Palestine community members who are facing threats of deportation, expulsion, suspension, and more across the U.S. As we start to see more cases like Mahmoud, Leqaa, Grant, Badar, Helyeh, Momodou, Alireza, we must turn to the collective power of community organizing and demand our academic institutions protect our international, undocumented, Palestinian, and pro-Palestine community members. Check out and follow local unions, Palestine solidarity organizations like SJP, PYM, Within Our Lifetime, PAL-Awda and immigrant justice organizations to get involved and help fight back.
Free our students. Free them all. Free Palestine.
Uplift Corner
Uplift corner is space to help uplift organizations that are creating resources, offering assistance, and more. Making these resources and providing this education to our communities can be time consuming and un-funded work for a lot of these organizations. As a thank you for providing us these resources, please help us uplift our friends in the Uplift Corner!
Cornell graduate student Momodou Taal is a co-plaintiff with fellow graduate student Sriram Parasurama and Cornell Professor Mukoma Wa Ngugi in a lawsuit against Donald Trump, which charges that the latter’s Executive Orders have unconstitutionally targeted the First Amendment-protected speech of international students and scholars who protest or express support for Palestinians in Gaza. After filing the lawsuit Taal learned that ICE had revoked his international student visa and is now seeking to arrest him. Please contribute to this legal defense fund to defray the costs of the legal team that is working pro bono to defend their civil liberties.
